JROTC

The Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) is a program offered to high schools that teaches students character education, student achievement, wellness, leadership, and diversity. It is a cooperative effort between the Army and the high schools to produce successful students and citizens, while fostering in each school a more constructive and disciplined learning environment. The goals of the JROTC program are to teach students to:

  • Act with integrity and personal accountability as they lead others to succeed in a diverse and global workforce
  • Engage civic and social concerns in the community, government, and society
  • Graduate prepared to excel in post-secondary options and career pathways
  • Make decisions that promote positive social, emotional, and physical health
  • Value the role of the military and other service organizations

With the school’s support, the JROTC program achieves these goals by using a world-class 21st Century, technology driven, student centered curriculum. The curriculum consists of education in citizenship, leadership, social and communication skills, physical fitness and wellness, geography, and civics.

The curriculum is facilitated and taught by retired Army personnel. Qualified retired Army personnel are employed by the schools to teach the JROTC curriculum. JROTC teacher qualifications are based on military experience, maturity, stability, and leadership acquired over 20 years of service to our nation. To safeguard the viability of the JROTC program, the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Education endorse the proposition that states recognize that JROTC instructors are certified to teach JROTC and the array of subject areas embedded (e.g., Physical Education, Health/Wellness, Civics, etc.).

JROTC is a successful program, making substantial contributions to students, schools, and communities which benefit greatly from its presence. The benefits of JROTC are reflected in metrics impacting all schools in the U.S.

The National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are the nation’s premier organizations established to recognize outstanding high school and middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NHS and NJHS serve to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character (and Citizenship for NJHS). These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929.

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS and NJHS. NHS and NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

FBLA is the oldest and largest national organization for students preparing for careers in business leadership. FBLA prepares students for “real world” professional experiences. Members gain the competitive edge for college and career successes. More than a quarter of a million students in 6,000 schools participate in this organization.

FBLA takes students to major cities throughout the United States such as Orlando, FL; Nashville, TN; Dallas, TX and others. They get to know people in across the state and across the nation at FBLA sponsored events.

Members have the opportunity to compete for awards and recognition on the local, state, and national levels in more than 40 different event categories including Web Page Design, Marketing, Business Plan, Public Speaking, Job Interview and much, much more!

Student Council is the student leadership at Central High School. Student Council members sit in on our site leadership team meetings to communicate to us the student perspective on issues. They are also involved in a number of other focus groups and decision-making committees here at school. They help organize school spirit activities like homecoming and spirit week as well. Student leadership development is the process of involving students in meaningful ways both in and beyond the classroom. It is providing opportunities for students to demonstrate their talents, skills, and interests while continuing to develop new skills. It is also about giving students more ownership of the programs they attend.

Band logo

The Chattanooga Central High School Band enjoys a long reputation of musical excellence. Year after year, the Central Band has worked hard to live up to higher and higher expectations and to achieve goals set by the students. Band class meets 5th block every day, with marching band in the fall and concert band in the spring. Students must have been in band in middle school or have been in private lessons prior to entering the 9th grade in order to enroll in the class. We also offer a beginning band class, where no prior knowledge is needed to enroll.

On May 17, 2022, The Performing Arts League of Chattanooga awarded a grant for $1,000 to the Central High School Piano Lab to help purchase more equipment, music, and teaching supplies for the lab.  We are very thankful for the support of this organization!  

Piano Class is open to students with NO piano experience through advanced piano students.  Students in the piano lab use headphones while they practice at the Kawai digital pianos so that they are able to work independently.  Mrs. Katheron Latham, Piano/Choral teacher, is able to demonstrate from the teacher piano and then help students individually with their personal study.

 

Students who recently completed the first semester of piano class have been amazed about the level of pianistic skill they are able to acquire in just one semester of class.  Xander Akins, one of the students in the first piano class stated his favorite part of the class was “learning how to read the notes and play just about anything if I took long enough to practice it.”   Tongun Gore, another piano student, stated this class “truly was enjoyable.”  Students are NOT required to have a piano or keyboard at home if they are “in person” students, because they will be able to practice every school day in the piano lab.

 

Mrs. Latham, CHS Piano and Choral Teacher, began taking piano lessons at the age of 7.  Mrs. Latham studied piano from 2nd through 12th grade, and even was a guest soloist pianist with the Huntsville (AL) Symphony in her high school years.  Mrs. Latham went on to study piano in college, receiving her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from the University of Alabama. While studying at the university, Mrs. Latham was chosen as a soloist with the University Symphony and appeared several times on the Alabama Public Television production, “Pianist At Work.”  Mrs. Latham went on to receive her Master of Arts in Music Education (Vocal/Choral) from the University of Alabama as well.  Mrs. Latham began teaching piano while in college and has now been teaching piano and voice lessons for 31 years.  Mrs. Latham is excited to offer the opportunity for piano instruction to the students of Central High School!

The choral department of Central High School is known as  the Central Voices. The Central Voices are comprised of 2 choirs: Central Singers and Concert Choir.

The Central Singers are the beginning level choir of CHS.  This course is open to any student, in any grade, with no audition required.

The Concert Choir is an auditioned group open to students who have completed an audition for Mrs. Latham. This choir meets every semester and performs a wide variety of musical styles and often performs in the community at various events.

The choral department of Central High School has a rich heritage of presenting quality learning and performing experiences for our students. If you are interested in joining the Central Voices, please contact Mrs. Latham.
